Presented in Grigio Titanio (dark silver) with a black leather interior, this aggressively elegant two-seat grand tourer has covered a little over 24,000 miles. With a fabulous 5.0-litre V12 engine it’s something of a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’; outperforming many of its mid-engined contemporaries but offering total practicality. It’s a true modern classic.
Our car is a 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello, one of the 457 right-hand drive cars made for the UK market, and is presented in Grigio Titanio Silver with a Nero leather interior.
Replacing the Ferrari 512 M, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was launched at the Nürburging race circuit in 1996 and marked Ferrari’s return to front-engine, rear-wheel drive V12-powered cars. The launch featured a team of Ferrari’s Formula 1 drivers, both past and present, on hand to demonstrate the car’s capabilities and firmly lay to rest speculation that the configuration could not out-perform a mid-engined car.
The Ferrari 550 Maranello proved the case beyond any doubt. Powered by a 478 bhp, 5.5-litre, 48-valve DOHC V12 engine, the car had a top speed of 199 mph, making it more than a match for its contemporaries: international testing going on to prove that it could outperform both the Ferrari 512 M and the Ferrari 355. As with its sibling, the Ferrari 456, the engine-drivetrain layout also provided welcome cabin and luggage space making the Ferrari 550 Maranello a practical proposition as an everyday car or luxurious grand tourer.
A total of 330 Ferrari 550 Maranellos were produced between 1996 and 2001, the car winning a variety of awards which are perhaps epitomised by Autocar proclaiming it to be ‘Britain’s Best Driver’s Car’ in 1998 and then saying “It continues to be the best GT on the block.” the following year.
Our car is in very nice condition. With just over 24,300 miles on the clock, it’s been inspected and serviced and comes with the all-important full service history along with its original, leather documentation wallet and toolkit. It’s a driver’s car ‘par excellence’.
