1973 Ferrari 246GT Dino Black (LHD)

An unusual and rare example of a truly iconic Ferrari: a US-spec Ferrari 246 GT Dino fitted with flared wheel arches – but without the Daytona-style seats usually associated with this option. The car has had just two owners, has 74,400 kms on the clock and is presented in black with a black vinyl interior.

Our car is a 1973, left-hand drive Ferrari 246 GT Dino finished to ‘US-spec’ with factory-fitted flared wheel arches and Campagnola alloy wheels. Originally finished in Giallo Fly (yellow) with a black vinyl interior, the car was refinished some years ago and is now presented in black.

The car was purchased new from Maranello Concessionaires in 1973 by an American professor working in the UK and shipped to California when he returned home the following year. In 1975 it was sold, its second owner keeping the car for over forty years until we purchased it in 2016.

Named to honour Alfredo ‘Dino’ Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari’s son and heir, the Dino marque was launched in 1968 specifically to take on the Porsche 911 series in the showrooms, its daring, for the time, mid-engine layout being more associated with sports racing cars than production cars.

Our car is an unusual example of a classic Ferrari and is something of a rarity. Buyers ordering the Ferrari 246 GT / GTS Dino with factory-fitted flared wheel arches usually specified Daytona-style seats at the same time, a combination that coined the identifying term, ‘flares and chairs’.

Less than 300 Ferrari 246 GT / GTS Dino cars were supplied with ‘flares’. Around 70% of these, say 210 cars, were built to US-spec and it’s believed that only 10% of them, say 20 cars, were the GT model. As far as is known, most of this small number of cars were specified with both ‘flares’ and ‘chairs’; in fact it’s thought probable that the number of US-spec 246 GTs specified with just ‘flares’ was no more than three cars.

The sleek and stylish Ferrari 246 GT Dino is undoubtedly one of Ferrari’s most iconic car. This is a lovely example, and one made all the more desirable by its almost unique specification.
