Ferrari 365GTS – Service & mechanical work
This two seater Spider with Pininfarina styling combines elegant looks with perfect near 50:50 weight distribution courtesy of the transaxle design and with independent rear suspension, handling is superb with no nasty surprises entering or exiting a corner. A truly astonishing experience to drive, even when compared with modern cars.
This particular car is the only right hand GTS in the world and she is being well cared for.
We installed our adjustable throttle linkage to this car so that air flow at open as well as idle can be accurately and separately metered, giving improved control across the entire rev range.
At the moment the car runs with a twin points setup and the plan is to put those to one side and switch to electronic ignition for improved reliability and ease of maintenance. This procedure is easily reversed.
We found that the inlet manifolds were not correctly mated to the engine block since, over the years, the metal had distorted and the mixture was being impeded in its flow from the carburettors and contaminated with unwanted swirl. This was rectified with careful machining of the manifolds so that they not only sit in the ‘V’ correctly, but that the ports are aligned with the cylinder head so there is no impedance of the mixture.
The clutch pedal weight was lightened by improving hydraulic advantage with a new slave cylinder with increased bore and we also relocate the assister spring so that it is in the correct over centre position.
There is no reason why the Colombo engines should over heat in hot summer weather and we have tested these cars in stationary traffic when the weather is 30 degrees centigrade with no overheating problems.
